MAPs for energy materials – Experiments, simulations, and machine learning

General information

The GC-MAC Summer School 2023 will be held in Karlsruhe, Germany, on 18-22 September 2023. With the theme “MAPs for energy materials – Experiments, simulations, and machine learning,” the school will cover multiple aspects of materials acceleration platforms (MAPs) for energy materials. This includes experimental aspects of automated synthesis and characterization, integrating simulation methods in materials design, and machine learning methods for MAPs. Experts from different fields will hold lectures and provide hands-on tutorials on their subjects. Additionally, we will visit the battery MAP at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm and plan social and networking activities and a poster session. The participation fee of 370 € covers organization, local support, lunch and drinks during the day, the excursion to Ulm, a visit to Heidelberg, and the social dinner. Transport to and from Karlsruhe, as well as accommodation, needs to be organized and paid for by the participants individually. Lab visit

  • We will visit the lab and battery MAP of Helge Stein at the Helmholtz Institute Ulm
  • A bus to Ulm at 8:30 AM (the meeting place will be announced) will be organized
  • Lunch in Ulm will be provided
  • We will return by bus to Karlsruhe at ~6 PM, followed by a self-organized dinner
  • In case there is interest in visiting particular labs at KIT, please reach out to Pascal Friederich and Tobias Schlöder. We can help organize additional lab visits during the week.

Brainstorming discussions

  • We planned plenty of extended coffee breaks, which you can use to talk to the speakers, connect with each other, and discuss
  • We will announce discussion questions that match the topics of each day. The goal will be to identify open technical and scientific challenges evolving around MAPs

Transport to and in Karlsruhe

  • By airplane

    • To “Frankfurt Airport” (international), “Stuttgart Airport” (mostly European and national), or “Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport” (mostly national)
    • From the airports, you can use public transport to get to Karlsruhe (see trains)

  • By train

    • Karlsruhe is well connected to the high-speed train network in Germany and Europe (ICE, IC, EC, TGV, …)
    • From Frankfurt Airport: IC and ICE connections bring you directly from the airport to Karlsruhe: “Frankfurt am Main Flughafen Fernbahnhof” to “Karlsruhe Hauptbahnhof (HbF)” (1 hour)
    • From Stuttgart Airport: You first need to take the subway to Stuttgart Main Station, and from there a train to Karlsruhe (1 – 1.5 hours)
    • From Karlsruhe / Baden-Baden Airport: There is a bus connection to Rastatt and then local transport to Karlsruhe (1 – 1.5 hours)
    • Tickets on machines, on the website (https://www.bahn.com/en), or on the Deutsche Bahn app: Android and Apple. Be careful: If you buy a ticket that only includes local transport (RB, RE, IRE trains), then this ticket is not valid for high-speed trains (IC, ICE, EC, TGV) 
    • Germany ticket: There is a ticket in Germany for 49€ for one month, which allows you to use any local train and local city transport in Germany. Be careful: IC and ICE trains as well as other high-speed trains (e.g. TGV and EV) are excluded! Also: The ticket can only be bought as a subscription. If you buy it, cancel it again for the next month.

  • Local transport in Karlsruhe

    • There is excellent public transport within Karlsruhe: Streetcar map 
    • A single ticket within the Karlsruhe city area (“Wabe 100”) costs 2.40 € (available at machines or on the KVV.regiomove app: Android and Apple)

    • The streetcar stop directly next to the venue (Triangle) is called “Kronenplatz”
